Project Benin - Programme of international cooperation: THE CHAINS OF FREEDOM

BENEFICIARIES

The beneficiaries of this project are people (hundreds of men, women and children) who, as a result of their hardship and sufferings, due to their state of mental health and social maladjustment, are excluded from the normal contexts of life and are frequently subjected to physical and psychological acts of violence.
These people are the direct recipients of the aid provided for the construction and management of reception centres, the construction of houses to provide medium and long-term accommodation, work training, the start-up and development of businesses activities for them to work in and, in a broader sense, they are also the beneficiaries of the initiatives that aim to foster the creation of a cultural, health, social and economic, relational and affective context capable of supporting them along their journey towards rehabilitation and reintegration into their original towns and villages.

AIMS OF THE PLAN OF ACTION

  • To provide support for the construction and management of reception centres for the mentally sick.
  • To construct houses for mental health sufferers and social outcasts to live.
  • To promote the set-up and development of  skill training that can help integrate the mentally ill back into working and social environments.
  • To sensitise the general public to the problems of mental health in Benin and in Western Africa for the purpose of creating a local and international network to support the work of the St. Camille del Lellis Association.
